The Ballet Present “Étoile” Arrives Subsequent Week

Étoile comes from Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, whose final foray into ballet was Bunheads, a present I actually needed to love however DEEPLY didn’t. For me, it uncovered her worst tic: nobody taking a breath between sentences, and lengthy scenes between two people who find themselves not listening to one another and/or actually even speaking TO one another. The worst model of this was a scene that I feel lasted a complete act, by which a woman thought a boy was proposing and he or she spent 10 minutes monologuing about why this was or wasn’t a good suggestion, and a) it was so painfully apparent she misunderstood, like I’m not even certain the 2 of them had been on a date at this level?!?, and b) HE didn’t right her till the END of it. Ugh. Lots of her subsequent work had a variety of that, too, and it at all times makes me so impatient. It’s like each phase of each present is created to be an audition piece for one thing else.

ANYHOO. The trailer for Étoile strikes a barely extra relaxed tone, however possibly that’s within the enhancing. The present is about the very best goddamn dancers in New York and the very best goddamn dancers in Paris, and the way the 2 struggling corporations resolve the answer is to commerce principals for some time.

I admit, I’m curious.
